In Haryana as per the state government rule, an ERD (an On Line UPS for individual Elevator) is essential so as to get BCC for any developer. ERD – Emergency rescue device, even though a DG set is installed at site and ARD for the elevator, ERD is essential for all high-rise towers using high speed (in some case regenerative drives OTIS, Thyssenkrupp at present) elevators so as to avoid any jerks during power cut / power fluctuations, to the passengers travelling inside the lift car and to ensure smooth operation of the lift.

Moreover, Haryana government officials are insisting that each individual lift must have a separate ERD meaning centralised combined UPS / ERD is NOT acceptable, with this the total number of UPS almost equals the number of lifts getting installed in Haryana.

Renutron iERD ECO mode operation

For High Speed Regenerative drives used in high rise buildings

RENUTRON iERD with ECO mode is using an intelligent GRID synchronised technolgy specially designed for High Speed Regenerative drives used in high rise bulidings. In normal operation when the utility power is within safe limits, Lift operates on utility supply through a Static switch. The entire regenerative power generated by the Lift drive is returned back to the GRID.

MThus the same amount of import units from utility gets reduced. During mains fail condition or if the utility supply goes beyond the predefined safe limits, immidiately lift load will be transferred to iERD without any break (<2mS). On battery mode it will give @15 min back up. During battery mode, regenerative power will be utilized to recharge the batteries. On healthy grid supply resumption, lift load gets automatically retransferred to the grid without any break.

ECO mode Benefits

In normal UPS, load is always running on inverter, hence it consumes @10% more power as compared to ECO mode, due to double conversion losses.
In ECO mode regenerative power from LIFT gets fully utilized. Normally it gets wasted in the form of heat energy in other normal UPS.
In ECO mode life of all power electronics and wound components will be increased as inverter will come into operation only during grid failure.
Current harmonics reflected to the Grid are very less in iERD with ECO mode as compared to any normal UPS.
In ECO mode, the UPS charger is normally used mostly for charging the batteries so the ripple content is low as compared to double conversion mode, as a result the battery life and performance get improved.
The audible noise is also low (< 4-5 decibels) also the ambient temperature and that within the unit is low.

Renutron iERD Operation

RENUTRON iERD is specially recommended for high-speed LIFTS being used in high rise buildings. (High speed LIFTS using both regenerative and non-regerative drives)

Normal Operation

On mains mode, iERD will provide clean, safe and regulated power to the LIFT. Output power supply will be free from all types of power quality problems (like fluctuation, high / low voltage, spikes, frequency variation etc.) So it will ensure long life and jerk free operation of LIFT. Display provided in the LIFT car will show iERD status as running on mains mode.

Mains Fail Condition

When mains supply fails, or single phasing / phase reversal condition occurs, iERD shifts to battery backup mode. LIFT passenger will not experience any kind of jerks or power fail condition. LIFT will continue its normal operation as per the battery charge. Advanced Wireless Audio-Visual Display in lift car will show iERD status as running on battery mode, and also gives voice annunciation (LIFT IS RUNNING ON BATTERY MODE) to the passengers. Display will also annunciate if there is bnormal mains supply i.e., single phasing / phase reversal.

Battery Low Condition

In case of prolonged power cuts (or DG sets not taking over), batteries may get slowly exhausted. When battery voltage reaches to battery low pre-alarm level, iERD will indicate battery low pre-alarm message and LIFT car Display will give voice annunciation as well as text message - (BATTERY LOW, LIFT MAY STOP AT ANY TIME).

Emergency Rescue Operation

If iERD is further used after battery low pre-alarm and if batteries reaches to Battery Low Condition, iERD function automatically gets activated and avoids LIFT passengers getting trapped inside the LIFT car. On Battery backup mode, if battery low condition is occurred, iERD will first check if LIFT is in running condition, iERD will allow the LIFT to complete its travel. After LIFT travel is completed, the LIFT car doors will get automatically opened and the passengers get rescued and iERD will stop its operation to prevent batteries getting deeply discharged, and waits for Mains supply to get resumed. In this way, iERD ensures safety & jerk free operations for the passengers travelling inside the lift car and avoid panic situations. After this rescue operation, Advanced Wireless Audio-Visual Display will give voice annunciation as well as text message that LIFT IS STOPPED DUE TO BATTERY LOW. This prevents the false service calls to lift supplier or lift maintenance agency

Renutron ERD’s Unique Features

The conventional eARD (Emergency Auto Rescue Device) with voice messaging facility was invented by RENUTRON R &D Team in 2008. It is useful in providing audio-visual status of Lift UPS to the passengers travelling through the lift car. Many a times the vital information (especially the unhealthy situation) remains unattended or not acted upon, which may result into lift stoppages and passengers getting stuck inside the lift car.
